JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE ANNUAL MEETING SEPTEMBER 13, 2011
Jewish Family Service (JFS) invites the community to attend its Annual Meeting on Tuesday September 13 th at 7:00 p.m. in the Harry Spector Lounge of the JCC. Attendees will learn what the JFS has accomplished during the year and what challenges lie ahead. The meeting also includes the installation of the officers and board of directors for 2011-12, special volunteer award presentations and recognition of President’s Club members. We will conclude with our very popular “make your own sundaes” desserts. Robert Durham is master of ceremonies for the evening and Rabbi Ron Muroff will install the officers and directors.
JFS welcomes Shira Ettinger to the 2011-12 board. Shira was a member of the second Limudim graduating class and was sponsored by JFS for this Jewish leadership-training course. Shira, an MSW, when asked about her interest in JFS stated, “I see the amazing scope of what social work can do and JFS is an agency that deals with all those areas.” Shira is a past volunteer for the Senior Services Department’s Two’s Company program, so she is not a stranger to JFS programs. Shira will be installed with the 2011-12 slate of officers and directors: Jennifer Ross, President, Karen Ball, Vice President of Programs, Neely Meals, Vice President of Development, Rob Durham, Treasurer, Cindy Lynch, Immediate Past President, Doreen Evrard, Marcia Finkelstein, Jon Freeman, Carol Hillman, Amy Keisling, Nevin Mindlin, Vicki Smeltz and Bruce Weber. Carol Sharp is leaving the board and JFS thanks her for her service and valuable input.
JFS is proud to honor three very special volunteers: Nancy Heyman, Julie Sherman and Randy Bronstein. Nancy will be receiving the Volunteer Extraordinaire Award, as she has a long history of volunteer service with JFS. Nancy was a JFS board member from 1994-2007, including officer positions of Vice President of Development, Vice President of Programs and Secretary/Treasurer. During her early board service, Nancy was a volunteer for Kosher Meals on Wheels (KMOW). She retired from the Jewish Group Home Advisory Committee last year, having served on the committee from its inception. Nancy has been the JFS “bow maker” for the Centerpieces for Tzedakah project for over ten years. Her beautiful bows have graced these baskets for many simchas at our synagogues and temples. We can truly say that Nancy is a Jack-of-All-Trades when it comes to Jewish Family Service. Senior Services will be honoring two long-standing KMOW packers who have been packing for five years, Randy Bronstein and Julie Sherman. They are both very committed to the program. Randy is so dedicated that he sometimes comes in the night before delivery to get his meals packed and placed in the cooler. Randy became interested in KMOW because of his Uncle Aaron Cohen. Randy stated, “my Uncle Aaron had been using KMOW for some time and they (JFS) were very good to him and it meant a lot to him to get meals each day.” Shortly after his Uncle’s passing Randy read about a need for volunteers in the JFS Newsletter and he signed on. For Julie Sherman, Kosher Meals on Wheels was a natural fit. She had been involved with a Meals program for nine years while she lived in Australia. When Julie came back home in 2006, she spoke with Lori Weitzman, our KMOW coordinator, and soon started packing. Julie now commutes between two homes, in Philadelphia and Harrisburg (with her husband Marty Rogoff). Julie makes a point of being in Harrisburg for her packing day. If she can’t make it in on her assigned day, she switches with Marty Lamonoff of whom she says, “Marty Lamonoff is my hero, he taught me how to pack, and if I can’t make it in, I switch off with Marty.” Julie also served on the JFS board. Unfortunately, Julie will receive her award in abstentia, as she will be in Israel on September 13.
Please come out and celebrate the good things that JFS does in the community, honor our volunteers and supporters and enjoy a delicious “Sundae on Tuesday!”
